Much has been written about politicians' integrity. However, in this edition, we want to shed light on other types of integrity issues: non-criminalized integrity breaches, those that are not dealt with in criminal law. Why focus on politicians? Because the government is composed of politicians, their authority is the greatest in the country, and they always receive the most publicity. This means that people look up to them as role models.
It seems inevitable for politicians to use specific language to gain the fanaticism and votes of the people so they can stay in power. But that’s not all:
· They often exaggerate and even knowingly lie about their achievements and their opponents' failures.
· They hardly give credit to other political parties because they believe that doing so would show weakness.
· They prefer not to continue with a good project started by those who stepped down, so they don’t have to give them even partial credit. That implies a waste of resources and time, but who cares?
Social scientists must have studied how much this attitude has influenced people, especially our youngsters. This runs counter to the common way of educating at home and in schools, highlighting that our world is broken and hurting. These breaches of integrity, simply called lies, cause significant damage to all the efforts that the government and NGOs are making to improve integrity levels in their country. All of this is in addition to the accusations that the government is failing to enforce laws that punish integrity violations.
Is there a solution? LWI sees only a solution on the long term. Transhumanists*[believe there will be a time when, through technology, all suffering and human limitations are eliminated from our planet. Do these limitations also include human failures like lying? Please note, this is a belief. On the other hand, we at Leading With Integrity choose to believe in what the Judeo-Christian worldview offers us: a new earth created by the Creator, in which righteousness dwells.
