Over the past couple of weeks, we have been giving you a peek at what to expect from our upcoming national integrity conference, which will take place on October 30, 2026, at the Sandals Royal Resort in Curaçao. The theme is: Beyond compliance: Building integrity from the inside out. In brief, we aim to address the mismatch between the desired goal (internalized integrity) and the strategy (imposing rules and exercising control).
Let’s be clear, once again: LWI is not saying we don’t need rules and control. What we are saying is that rules and control alone will only produce compliance. The irony is that every policymaker desires more than mere compliance.
Based on research, LWI proposes an approach that uncovers the rationale behind the advocated rules. This approach entails the teacher aiming to make the pupil an agent of integrity. That’s what they do in the business world. A car salesman, for example, isn’t just selling cars. He must embody the agency of that particular car brand so that in his approach to clients, he makes them feel what he is convinced of.
Back to integrity. How do you make your pupil an agent of integrity? There are several principles. One of them is to look for common ground. Since integrity is a moral issue, look for common ground on morality. It doesn’t take long to discover that there already exist Ten Moral Laws that we are familiar with. These Ten Moral Laws have nothing to do with religion. They transcend all cultures and epochs. But the key is not only to know of their existence but also to understand why they exist.
At this upcoming conference, the speakers will present a strategy for making any member of our society an agent of integrity. After the speeches, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the implications of the new approach. Above all, it won’t be merely an enrichment for those present: we will conclude the conference with a resolution on implementing this new approach, which will be handed to the government.
