LWI Newsletter – Is there a limit to defending integrity?

This month, while reading the newspaper, I noticed a parallel between two incidents that had caught the press's attention. On May 5, Curaçao commemorated the 13th anniversary of the first political murder, and on May 3, World Press Freedom Day was observed to assess global press freedom, defend media independence, and highlight ethical journalism. According to UNESCO:
More than 1,600 journalists have been killed since 1993.
In 2022–2023, a journalist was killed roughly every four days.
The parallel I saw was that in both cases, someone is willing to risk their life to uncover the truth. That raised the question: Is there a limit to defending integrity? At the national level, in both the public and private sectors, policymakers are designing whistleblower systems so that anyone who discovers an integrity breach knows the proper protocol for reporting it. A key element of these systems is the protection of the whistleblower.
The answer to the question above depends on your worldview. Is an integrity breach merely an unwelcome phenomenon that hinders social and economic life, or is it a fundamental evil that must be fought at all costs? Your answer determines whether you will go all the way, without limits, in your fight against integrity breaches, or whether you foresee a point at which you give up this fight.
Maybe your gut says you have to consider it a fundamental evil, but your mind and common sense say you should take a realistic view. There are many imperfections in life, and not everyone is called to go all the way, even to the point of risking their life for the well-being of their nation.
On the other hand, you may think: what good is it to put my life at risk only to save a country from collapsing? This viewpoint is based on a life that’s passing away without any eternal purpose.
LWI’s worldview is based on the premise that justice should be upheld and that our efforts are not merely for a fleeting life. We believe that humans are eternal beings and that the way you live your earthly life determines your eternity. In that light, LWI is convinced that the fight against integrity breaches should continue at all costs because justice is not just a foundation stone in our societies but, above all, a key value at the eternal level.
