LWI Newsletter – Externalized strategy vs internalized integrity
“The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." — Harper Lee†, American novelist.
The Leading With Integrity (LWI) team has begun preparations for its 9th integrity conference, to be held this October. During these months, our newsletters will feature the conference’s theme, giving you a peek at what to expect from this wonderful gathering.
We began this series with the seat of integrity. The seat of integrity is the heart. Secular psychologists do not include this concept in their jargon. They consider the soul their object of study. Yet we use it every day in our conversations. Theologians, however, see the heart as a combination of basic faculties, such as the mind, the will, and the conscience (as an instrument of conviction). When you do something from the heart, it reflects harmony among these faculties. If you decide not to make personal calls during working hours simply because you understand your boss’s point of view, but you are not convinced it’s wrong, you may follow the rules, but you don’t do so from the heart. That’s what we call compliance.
In most discussions of integrity, people often quote C. S. Lewis’s saying, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” By doing so, they acknowledge they are not satisfied with mere compliance. But the problem is that an externalized strategy can only produce compliance.
People may do the right thing in the absence of monitoring for a variety of reasons, including:
· Out of fear (maybe there is a hidden camera)
· Personal benefits (might be an asset in the long term)
· His family’s reputation (doesn’t want to shame his family)
· Out of a conviction (e.g., strong moral education)
· Out of reference for the Creator (He’s watching all the time)
If we are looking for the condition called internalized integrity, only the fourth and fifth reasons qualify. Without internalization, a person might do the right thing because he doesn’t want to be caught. However, a person who has internalized integrity will do the right thing even in the absence of monitoring, because his motivation doesn’t come from monitoring.
In our next edition, we will explain how an externalized strategy came to be used to produce internalized integrity.

Sikólogonan sekular no ta inkluí e konsepto aki den nan lenga profeshonal. Nan ta konsiderá ku ta alma ta opheto di nan estudio. Sinembargo nos ta us’é tur dia den nos kombersashonnan.
Sitando esaki, nan ta rekonosé ku nan no ta satisfecho ku djis kumplimentu.
· Fo’i un konvikshon (p.e. un edukashon moral fuerte)
· Fo’i un reverensia pa Kreador (E ta mira tur ora)
