Damages by non-criminalized integrity breaches

LWI Newsletter – Damages by non-criminalized integrity breaches

"You must remember that some things legally right are not morally right." — Abraham Lincoln (President of the USA; 1861 - 1865).

Most of us are convinced that we must fight integrity breaches and prevent them at all costs. But do we really mean all integrity breaches? I think we all agree that corruption, such as bribery, embezzlement, and fraud, must be fought. These are violations that criminal law addresses. But there are also breaches that criminal law leaves unaddressed. These are the non-criminalized integrity breaches. For example:

· A leader who constantly criticizes his followers and never encourages or

· A leader who deliberately doesn’t care about nurturing successors, thinking this will endanger his job.

We are not moved by these kinds of breaches because the financial or economic damage is not substantial. But is that true?

Let’s consider another example on an international scale. Because of the war that’s going on between the United States and Israel against Iran, oil prices have gone up, which has slowed down economic growth. But in these cases, oil prices are mainly influenced by trader speculation. A common factor that triggers immediate reactions among traders is what top leaders, for instance, the President of the USA, say about the war. If he says that the war is taking a while, implying that the oil supply will be endangered for the time being, the prices will go up. That means he can manipulate oil price movements just through his speeches, even when his assessment is wrong or when he deliberately lies.

Who can deny that the consequences of such “doubtful” speeches might be disastrous? According to the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris, this war has already cost the European Union 22 billion euros. Food prices will also reach an all-time high, plunging the poor in most countries into even greater poverty than they already face. All of this because these kinds of integrity breaches are not addressed by criminal law.

Since this example is not unique, the question arises: What can be done to avoid these integrity breaches? LWI is aware that we have stepped into a very complicated area. However, in the short term, we think our efforts should not be aimed only at cultivating extrinsic integrity but also at intrinsic integrity, the integrity from within. That can be done by teaching that transforms the way we think, not just how to follow the rules. LWI realizes that the results of this approach will take a long time to be seen, but we have to start somewhere, someday.

LWI Newsletter – Dañonan pa motibu di infrakshonnan di integridat ku no ta den lei

Mi ta kere ku nos tur ta di akuerdo ku korupshon manera tuma sèn bou’i mesa, malversashon di plaka i froude mester wòrdu kombatí. Esakinan ta violashonnan ku lei penal ta dil kuné.

Pa motibu dje guera ku ta tumando lugá entre Merka i Israel kontra Iran, preisnan di petroli a subi loke a frena kresementu ekonómiko.

Segun e Instituto Jacques Delors na Paris, e guera aki ya a kosta Union Europeo 22 bion euro. Preisnan di kuminda tambe lo subi te aya hinkando e pobernan den mayoria pais den mas pobresa ku nan ta den kaba. Tur esaki pasobra lei penal no ta dil ku e tipo di infrakshonnan aki.

Komo ku e ehèmpel aki no ta úniko, e pregunta ta surgi: Kiko por hasi pa evitá e tipo di infrakshonnan di integridat aki?
