LWI Newsletter – Blind spot in integrity policy

Leading With Integrity (LWI) looks forward to its upcoming integrity conference, to be held on October 30, 2026, at Sandals Royal Curaçao. In these Newsletter editions, we have been giving you a peek at what to expect at this conference. As disclosed in earlier editions, the conference focuses on the mismatch LWI seeks to expose between the objective of the integrity policy and the strategy. The objective is intrinsic integrity, from the heart, as disclosed in numerous documents. The strategy, however, produces compliance, or extrinsic integrity. In our last edition, we uncovered why mere compliance should not be our goal. Then the question arises: why do they persist with this ineffective strategy?
To answer this question, we need to get to the root of the problem. We have to go back to the birth of science. The scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries didn’t occur in a vacuum. It was, in some sense, a historical reaction to the social and religious developments of the time. In reaction to the “overspiritualization” of social life, science was grounded in materialism. Materialism is the belief that only matter exists. For a materialist, any spiritual idea or entity is merely a product of human imagination.
The scientific method, applied to the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology), also spread to the social sciences, leading to the distorted view that any social problem, such as integrity breaches, can be solved through materialistic measures. But integrity resides in the human heart, as we saw at the beginning of this series.
In the meantime, psychologists don’t agree that integrity breaches are purely material phenomena. They are moral problems. However, policymakers, trained to think only in materialistic terms, don’t know any other approach, even though they may agree that morality plays a major role. In our next edition, we will explore how to fight integrity breaches by taking their moral dimension into account.
