We live in a technological age where everything spins around technology and science. Since the scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries, we have been trying to mathematize life as much as possible. We have reached a stage where we long to express every relationship in figures. Statistics are all that we want.
When it came to the definition and application of the system called democracy, we thought the best way to measure it was to do a headcount. Although, in practice, this had to endure many struggles and has been subject to many updates, we have ended up with the simple rule that the majority of the people’s votes determines the wish of the people. Period!
Last month, Curaçao held its elections, resulting in one political party securing 13 of the 21 available seats in Parliament. Consequently, the executive power will be vested in a single political party, excluding the counterbalancing power you would have from other political parties. This development has worried many observers and political analysts because this is the opposite of what democracy is meant to be. They agree that this outcome cannot and should not be changed, but still, some preconditions must be met. In summary, they can be stated as follows:
This one-party government must adopt a policy of full transparency. This means that they must put accountability to the parliament at the top of their priority list. In addition to this, they should be open to the press and willing to answer all questions concerning the general and specific policy they are carrying out.
This government must be constantly aware of the heartbeat of the people to determine whether they are executing their desires or not. This can be done by having representatives gather information from the people on a micro scale.
The enforcement of these two prerequisites cannot be mathematized. They will only be practiced when this one-party government underscores that democracy is more than just a statistical majority. Being accountable is an integrity trait. Let’s give them some room to prove that.
