Evidence-based Worldview Part 2

English version (Pa papiamentu skrol bai mas abou)

LWI Newsletter – Evidence-based worldview 2

"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." – famous physicist Isaac Newton acknowledging his predecessors.

Our last edition was dedicated to the concept of worldview, and we showed with a few simple examples that everybody has a worldview. Each one of us lives by some moral standard. We also stated that although worldviews are subjective, you could look for evidence in practice when adopting a worldview. Hence, the title “evidence-based worldview”.

Now, next to the simple examples we provided in our last edition on a personal level, is there evidence on a broader societal scale that a particular worldview has influenced our lives throughout history? Let’s first agree upon what has impacted human lives for the last centuries. Undoubtedly, it’s the tremendous scientific and technological advancements we experience every day, from being transported by animal force to sophisticated aircraft, from practicing medicine based on trial and error to treatments with an unprecedentedly high chance of cure, from communication through couriers to cell phones that are way more than just phones. The question is: which worldview laid at the foundation of this development?

Among the many worldviews, there was only one in the 16th and 17th centuries to which these developments can be attributed. Historians generally agree that the Judeo-Christian worldview played a significant role in this development. Please note that we are not discussing a religion, as explained in our last edition; instead, it’s a worldview. Later, others took up the baton and continued to enhance the knowledge, but this particular worldview laid the foundation.

In what sense was the Judeo-Christian worldview pivotal? Because doing science requires that you discover the structure in nature. But before searching for structure, you have to believe that it exists. You don’t start searching for a cure for your stomachache if you don’t think that something caused it, do you?

Proponents of the Judeo-Christian worldview read in the Bible that the Creator of all things is a structured and orderly Person and concluded that His creation, nature, must also be subject to specific laws. Proponents of other worldviews didn’t believe that the Supreme Being would impose laws on non-human entities.

So, what’s the point? The point we are trying to make is that since integrity hinges on your worldview, it’s logical to base your integrity on a worldview that has proven and continues to prove its effectiveness. How do we do that? This will be disclosed in our next edition.

Den ki sentido e ‘worldview’ Hudeo-Kristian a karga tur kos? Pasobra pa praktiká siensia, bo mester deskubrí e struktura den naturalesa. Pero promé ku bo buska struktura, bo tin ku kere ku e t’ei. Bo n’ ta kuminsá buska un kura pa bo doló di stoma si bo no ta kere ku ta algu a kous’é, tòg? Partidarionan di e ‘worldview’ Hudeo-Kristian a lesa den Beibel ku Kreador di tur kos ta un Persona strukturá i ordená i nan a konkluí ku Su kreashon, naturalesa, mester ta suheto na leinan spesífiko.
